The Last Walks

New York City, 2020

After 11 fascinating years in New York, I decided to move back to Israel for personal and professional reasons. New York has embraced me, provided for me, and inspired me all these incredible years. I was hoping to depart from the Big Apple properly, but the Coronavirus pandemic forced me to expedite the process. I boarded an almost empty flight and when I landed in Tel Aviv, I immediately had to quarantine myself.

Before leaving, I decided to say goodbye to this wonderful city by visiting places that have special meaning for me — places I have lived in or that have visually inspired my artistic and photojournalistic work. Normally, I would have chosen to photograph these places with a sentimental-autobiographical touch, but these days are anything but normal. The urban space is almost naked of human presence and feels surreal. I decided to use my iPhone to photograph in panoramic format which I believe is best suited to capture this experience.

It pains me to see New York so exposed and suffering. This difficult, complex, and challenging struggle has intensified recently and will continue in the near future. I have seen this amazing city overcome major disasters in the past, and I hope it will once again showcase its power and strength.

Farewell my dear New York. I hope to see you again soon.

Coming Soon

New York City, 2008 - 2012

This series is an exploration of our visual relationship with the branded city centers and the commercial environment we live in. In recent years, a kaleidoscopic net of huge billboards has enveloped the commercial hubs of New York City. The branding of the cityscape has become so ubiquitous, that the colorful, monumental advertisements looming over the narrow streets seem to be virtually unnoticed by passersby. Giant billboards both dominate the urban landscape and blend into the background. Always in the peripheral vision, these ads turn the people moving through the space into passive spectators. They are pulled, unaware, into a staged set as the reality of the street merges with the commercial fantasy of the advertisements. The images are cropped in a way that makes the space appear flattened, blurring the scale and spatial relationships and creating a trompe l’oeil effect that is employed throughout the series.

Platforms

New York City, 2014 - 2016

“Platforms” is a series exploring the unique New York underground architecture and the people temporarily passing through it. Subway platforms seen from the point of view of a waiting commuter on the other side, present a voyeuristic experience geometrically dissected by the architecture of the space. Visually reminiscent of photographic filmstrips, the ubiquitous subway columns organize the space into multiple narratives. One needs to scan across in order to reveal dynamics between the passersby and see the complete picture. The platform becomes a stage where “actors” take their temporary place until the train passes and invites the following “act.”

The images in this series visualize the nuances of a self-inflicted isolation in an otherwise dense and chaotic mega-city. Interactions, or lack thereof, manifest themselves in body language and spatial locations of the commuters observed. Overwhelming usage of personal technological devices minimize the potential for human connection even further. Combining a voyeuristic practice with a photographic strategy taking advantage of the stations’ architectural characteristics, the series reflects detachment, separation, personal spaces, individualism, loneliness, and momentary connections in the underground niches of an urban metropolis.

Retrospective

This section mainly features NatanDvir’s career devotion and highlights from oeuvre with a focus on the humanizing and quotidian aspects of cultural, social and political issues. The works are selected from the photographer’s six series: Eighteen, ShiratHaYam, Shelter, Belief, Yom Kippur, and The Tel Avivians. As an objective observer with a deft hand, Dvir documents both the secular and the sacred, the extraordinary and the everyday. These independent images, sometimes harsh and poignant, are selected based on the photographic skills and strong artistry of the work itself. However, when considered together, these images create an interesting juxtaposition of different types of daily rituals and devotion, such as work, entertainment, and religious beliefs.
