A Retrospect of Mr. Wu Tung-Shing’s Classic Works from 2007 to 2020
Mr. Wu Tung-Shing resumed photography creation on May 19, 2007 after years of being engaged in business.
Invited by Mr. Hooi-Wah Suan, CEO of Taiwan International Visual Art Center (TIVAC), he joined “The First Photo Gallery of Taiwan: A Legend of Rose Marie” held by Taipei Fine Arts Museum. The exhibition was a revisit to the milestones of Taiwan’s photography development, with 200 image works from 16 senior Taiwanese photographers from 1953 to 1973, including Long Chin-San, Chang Tsai, Teng Nan-Kuang, Tang Sze-Pan, Yang Tien-Szu, Huang Tse-Hsiu, Lee Ming-Tiao, Huang Chin-Chu, Chow Chee-Kung, Fu Chung-Wen, Yen Tsang-Ji, Chou Shin-Chuan, Wu Shao-Tung, Cheng Shang-Hsi, and Chang Chao-Tang. There were also simulated scenes of “Rose Marie Gallery” so that the institutions that had influenced the photography industry for nearly half a century were again presented to the audience. At that time, Mr. Wu Tung-Shing also participated in the grand event and was invited by photography enthusiasts to work together for photography in Taiwan. Therefore, he established “Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Contest” (later renamed SKM PHOTO Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Contest) to encourage the rising stars of photography in Taiwan to keep engaging in image creation through the competition and diverse exhibitions.
Different from the general photography contests, the “SKM PHOTO Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Contest” features the narration of an image story through a series of five photos. Without any limitation on creative themes, ages, or nationalities, anyone interested in image creation can participate. The purpose is to showcase the photographers’ personal creative styles and show the image narrative tension through lenses. To provide image creators with a platform to challenge themselves and positively interact with photographer enthusiasts, the “SKM PHOTO Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Joint Exhibition Series Activities” are held every year. Winning works will join the traveling exhibitions at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi in northern, central, and southern Taiwan and be exhibited together with the works of renowned international photographers for the purpose of international exchange and promotion. Since 2007, Mr. Wu Tung-Shing has presented his new works at the exhibitions every year to serve as a model and encourage more people to engage in photography creation. More new breakthroughs are expected in the photography industry in Taiwan with the “Rose Marie Gallery” being witnessed as an important milestone of Taiwan’s photography development.
“Forest Dance” in 1961 was an important beginning for Mr. Wu Tung-Shing in his pursuit of photography scenes and winning awards during his studies. Later, he became more involved in photography and in the following year, he co-hosted the exhibition, “The Forgotten Paradise-Yeliu,” together with Mr. Huang Tse-Hsiu at Rose Marie Gallery in Taipei. Whenever Mr. Wu recalls the stories of when he shot the series works of “The Forgotten Paradise-Yeliu,” his eyes always exude a youthful look of excitement. To pursue the ever-changing natural scenery, whether it is a warm sunny day, a cold windy day, a rainy day, or even a strong typhoon day, he is never absent in order to record the “paradise” in his mind and enjoy the endless touching moments from photography. This time, featuring “Scene,” the exhibition is a retrospect of Mr. Wu’s classic works created during his busy schedule from 2007 to 2020. Through his precious images, let’s revisit the most beautiful scenes in the eyes of the founder of the “SKM PHOTO Shin Kong Mitsukoshi International Photography Contest,” Mr. Wu Tung-Shing.
