冬日的動物園,我站在馬來猴幾無遮蔽的水泥展場旁,忽見猴群紛紛靠緊、群聚瑟縮,除一護擁著幼猴的母猴,皆轉而背向遊客。乍到一群孩童,嘈雜奔至柵欄旁,數十隻小手爭相前指,又向猴群尖聲叫嚷不休。音量越高,母猴的面孔越加低垂,久久不動。
猴群的靈性、亞洲象在刻板行為外偶現的親密,及那柵欄背後的占有、依賴、孤獨。在失去自由之後,感官碎片四散。我們掠奪而得的,究竟是消遣去處,或是一個難以落幕的殘酷舞台?
In a winter’s day, I am standing next to the open-air concrete cage for the crab-eating macaques. Suddenly, all the animals go into a tight huddle and clinging to each other as if in fear of something. With the exception of one female macaque protecting her young, they all turn their backs towards the visitors. What happened? A bevy of young children has just run up to the cage with noises and chatters, and the dozens of fingers pointing and the loud voices shouting in the direction of the macaques. The louder they are yelling, the further the mother lowers her head. Other than that, she just sits there, motionless.
No matter how intelligent and sensible the macaques show, how intimate Asian elephants display, or how unnatural dependence and loneliness reveal from behind that fence, the perception is smashed after losing freedom. What we plunder is only a place for leisure, or a brutal stage which is barely to have a curtain call.
