在美國生活的時候,發現美國人對於可回收的產品或原料沒有再利用的觀念,而且路上很多垃圾。在韓國對於資源回收很嚴謹,但是大部分的韓國人卻只關心手邊的新產品,對於回收的垃圾毫無興趣。然而,垃圾對我來說就像寶物一樣珍貴。
我很容易被老舊和被丟棄物品的外觀和氛圍所吸引,在拍照的時候,常常在想「你是誰用過的東西呢?」「你從哪裡來的呢?」無論是它們的形狀、材質或顏色,都隱含著歷史意義,垃圾在我心裡比新產品更有趣。
Living in the United States, I discovered that the concept of recycling old items and materials is not very common, and there is a lot of garbage in the streets. In Korea, we have a very strict approach to recycling, but most Koreans only care about the new things they buy to replace the old stuff—no one takes an interest in the recycled trash, or what happens to it. For me, however, garbage has almost been a fascinating subject, a priceless treasure even.
I’m easily attracted by the appearance and aura of old, discarded objects. When I take pictures of them, I often wonder, “Who was your owner, who used to use you?” or “Where did you come from?” Whether it’s the shape, material, or color of such objects: all have a story to tell, all show signs of wear and tear, and this to my mind makes them more interesting then anything brand new.

這系列作品的創作手法叫Fuji transfer (拍立得轉印)。使用裝有富士拍立得底片的4x5大型相機進行拍攝,再撕拉拍立得到手工水彩紙上面。拍立得轉印可以讓照片有特別的邊緣和色調,就像每件垃圾也都獨一無二般。
Equipment and Approach: For this series of pictures, I used Fuji Transfer photo-image transferring with 4x5 negatives. I transferred the images to “handmade watercolor paper” to achiever the desired visual effect, both in terms of color and framing. The distinctive edge and slightly faded appearance of the background further underlines the uniqueness of each single object.
