優選 Outstanding Work Award

Urban Form/San Francisco

I often wandered around my neighborhood when studying in San Francisco and found that the houses are mostly the same and repeated but in rich colors that are colorful and eye-catching. After some research, I understood that they are following the legal regulations: new buildings must conform to the style of the local area to achieve the consistency of the cityscape. The regulations create a framework of style, but they cannot prevent the homeowners from showing their individuality through making changes in colors. I use compression characteristic of the telephoto lens to extract the reality and attempt to find the “specialty” hidden features in the “ordinary.” At the same time, it is also a self-reflection. We all live our own lives in the mundane world of “deindividualization.”
