▍《在》/《Being》
At the end of 2025, my close friend Hachi faced the final journey of Simba, the cat who had lived by her side for fifteen years, after being diagnosed with cancer. While Hachi shared her reflections and emotions about palliative care on social media, I picked up my camera to document their last days together.
As beings, Hachi and Simba held each other up — they were each other’s meaning. Through this process of photographing, I rediscovered another possibility of photography itself:beyond creation and documentation, it can also be a gesture of companionship — a way of being together with the other.
The days of palliative care rose and fell with uncertainty, woven through with anxiety, fear, comfort, and sorrow. Standing behind Hachi’s focused care, I observed intently. The camera’s “Being” became an invisible support to the caregiver. Photography was no longer just about capturing; it carried forward Simba’s existence and became a form of companionship. Within these finite moments, both the photographed and the photographer offered a gentle response to each other’s being.
