Fragments of the Sea
What do you see when you gaze into the deep blue?
Seaweed on the rocks, pufferfish swimming, and coral reefs underwater. Somewhere not too far away, a floating island of trash is growing, entangling dolphins, and harming turtles. Manmade rubbish is what we see and can’t see when we look out at the ocean. Marine debris is present today and will persist tomorrow, remaining long after humans have turned to dust. We make and discard, and one day, we will meet again as particles.
Fragments of the Sea is my ongoing project. The images I capture, which appear to depict "marine life," are, in fact, remnants of discarded waste. At a time when marine pollution continues to escalate, I reconstruct the current state of the ocean using objects collected during beach cleanups. Floating and sinking debris has become an unavoidable part of our view. As we gaze upon the sea, are we also looking at trash?
